My friend absolutely LOVEs to snowboard - it’s one of the few things she actually likes about the cold weather! Yea, she's the girl that would rather spend 365 days in 100 degree weather! Utah’s Deer Valley was ranked No.1 by readers of Ski Magazine in their 2010 Resort Survey. Second runner up was Whistler B.C. followed by Colorado’s own Vail in the 3rd spot.

“Deer Valley offers an easy going ski vacation for families” responded the readers in love with the friendly staff that always seems to know exactly what they need and when they need it. Deer Valley isn’t your budget ski vacation, but if you guys can afford your stay, you will enjoy great food and luxurious lodging.

Pssst… We want to tell you a secret! You know water? Shhh!!! Water, water, you know water? Good. You know it’s important to drink water? Shhh! Yes, drink water, yes, especially during hikes.

Well, maybe it’s not such a big secret. They say most of our body is water (that’s why I don’t like swimming – I’m afraid I’ll get mixed) and water is essential for all living things, but especially essential to all hikers who would like to stay living things.

Remember that your thirst level is not the most accurate indicator of your body’s water level. When planning a big hike, start with drinking around 20 ounces of water, a couple of hours before you start and during the hike you should be gulping around 10 ounces of water to every 15 minutes of sweat. In this way you will compensate on the body’s loss of water. But don’t drink too much all at once, you’ll feel heavy and get cramps.

If you drink during your little adventure, you will prevent icky nausea, fight exhaustion and avoid unnecessary risks like heat stroke.

The latest news tell us that Union Pacific Railroad agreed to let a new owner use the same tracks that take skiers down from Colorado up to the Winter Park resort.

The Ski Train introduced many people to ski during the 50’s and 60’s and flourished during the late 80’s and early 90’s and up until its final run to Winter Park on March 29, 2009.

According to USA Today “Chicago-based Iowa Pacific Holdings, which operates freight and excursion trains in six states including Colorado, wants to take over the service. Iowa Pacific President Ed Ellis says the train would use his company's equipment and Amtrak would provide the crews.”

How to get a SCUBA certification? Hold your breath

Did you know that SCUBA actually stands for the very-long-hold-your-breath-word: Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. Scuba diving is not much different than driving – mostly because of the license part. So how to get a SCUBA certification?

The scuba DMV is called PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) or SSI (Scuba Schools International), and they want you to learn how to dive like a shark – which means safely and correctly. If you don’t have a certificate or a license card issued by the PADI or SSI no one will rent you gear, give you air or let you dive. If they do – I’d check that air if I was you.

So the first thing to do is to contact an approved PADI instructor and schedule some class time. Yes, scuba certificate requires three steps: class, pool training and diving, and you will need to read a manual, study and have a short exam.

The first diving you’ll do won’t have much of underwater scenery to it. It will mainly contain children swimming from afar and maybe you will get lucky and find a quarter at the bottom of the pool. After the fun pool part you can go on and dive supervised in the open.

How To Survive a Bear Attack?

I was hiking with my sister in Yellowstone a couple of years ago in this very lonely track down the Yellowstone canyon. I remember till this very day the words that my sister whispered then: “I think I see a bear!”

We totally freaked out and started running as fast as we can. When we later told the story to a park ranger, he told us we were lucky to be alive because the worst thing you can do when you see a bear is run. How to survive a bear attack?

Bears can run over 30 miles per hour which means in quick calculation: 44 feet per second. Olympic athletes can’t run that fast!
If the bear does not notice you, make a big detour around the bear.
If he did see you, turn back and walk slowly – away from the bear.
That climbing up the tree thing – go ahead. But know that almost all bears can climb as well as you can, if not better.

If nothing works – play dead. Really. Lie face down with hands over your head and don’t move. Bear experts say the fighting and resistance only makes the bear angry and you don’t want to make the bear angrier than he is already.

Bears don’t really want to eat you and many hikers encounter bears and enjoy the amazing experience from a safe distance.

Last week we've discussed how to prepare to a hiking trip. So you got the GPS and first-aid kit and a lot of cheerful spirit and you are ready to go! But wait, you think we're done???

How to stay safe during the Hike

Don’t wander off alone. Stay in trail so you will be able to get assistance if something happens.
Enjoy animals from far. Don’t try to feed wild animals – you might end up as the main course.
Keep a steady hiking rhythm that can help you prevent exhaustion and make the hike more enjoyable.
Stop to get some rest in regular intervals. 10 minute break for every hiking hour is recommended.
Even if the stream looks better than bottled water, don’t be tempted to drink, unless you purify the water first.
If you’re planning on camping, make sure you know what the authorities think about it. Some places require a camping permit and it could be illegal to light up a fire in the wilderness.

What to do in case of Emergencies?

Be ready for emergencies and stay calm.
Contact emergency and rescue services immediately.
If you can not contact emergency services, leave the victim with a friend and go back for help.
See if the victim is conscious and responsive. Check breathing and make sure his airway is open.

So you are planning to go on a hike this weekend? Whether you're planning a short day hike or an overnight backpacking trip - you should know that follow some basic safety rules.

What can you do in order to be sure you’ll be coming back home healthy and in one piece?

Prepare well. Know the hike and take all relevant maps. GPS is great, but even a simple compass can be very important.
Take a cell phone but a satellite phone can be more useful in the wilderness.
Try to travel with professional and experienced hikers.
Be sure you are in proper shape and choose a hike you can handle. Practice. Start to carry a heavy backpack when you engage your daily activities.
Check weather forecast and make sure that climate conditions allow safe hiking.
Leave early in the morning so you can avoid traveling during the night.
Find a recommended gear list online and bring enough food and water. It’s always recommended to take more water than you think you need.
Always carry emergency equipment: first-aid kit, whistle, matches and a flash light.
But still, carry only the most important essentials. A heavy backpack can make your trip more strenuous and less enjoyable.

Rafting is fun, exciting, challenging and mostly a wet experience. Although it involves sitting, rafting is not your regular theme-park thrill-ride as it requires you to be active both in your body and mind.

There are several techniques you need to know before going on a rafting experience. There’s highsiding which basically means that in some dangerous cases you have to move to the high side of the raft so it will not turn over. There’s also keeping the boat in a straight line which requires team work and focus.

Rafting divides into difficulty levels – class I through VI where I is a backyard stream created by a hose and VI is practically impossible. But don’t worry, rafting isn’t that dangerous. There are more accidents in bowling than in rafting and most rafting accidents occur when getting on and off the boat.

Mountaineering – Not exactly your typical weekend hike

Mountaineering is basically like hiking, but you have to leave grandma out of the picture. Let’s say you don’t just hike the Kilimanjaro. Mountaineering involves a more challenging hiking, and you’ll get to much higher attitudes. You also have to keep the next rules:

Stay Safe.*
Don’t go for the Himalayas. If you are a beginner, you should act as one and start practicing in your back yard – that is if it has a nice little hill. Go to a state park that’s near you and work your way to the top. Literally.
Know your body. Don’t go over the top. You should be aware of what you are capable. Don’t join an advanced group if you are a beginner and remember to come physically prepared, stretched and all, so you won’t pull a muscle during the hike.
Practice. Start to carry a heavy backpack when you engage your daily activities. Run, jog, do bike, climb indoor. And carry a backpack.
Be ready. Write down a list of the things you need to take. Don’t forget to carry water – lots of water.
Read. Learn. Know the basic essentials. Review your Scouts education - figure how to tie a useful knot and work on your survival instincts.

Great Places to Dive

Palau, Micronesia

Palau is considered to be one of the most exciting diving sites in the world. There are over 100 dive sites along the 90 mile coral lagoon of Palau. You will find Blue holes, underwater caverns and a colorful variety of exotic marine species. Sharks, turtles, dolphins and rare fish gather at Palau at the crossroads of three of the world's major ocean currents.

California, La Jolla Cove

The entrance takes quite a few steps down, through a rocky cove and resting sun-tanners. Just beyond the entrance, you will find a large kelp forest and rocky area, beginning in 6 feet of water, and heads out to La Jolla Canyon. This is a great place to see local fish and crustaceans, and maybe even a shark or two. Down the coast is by far the best place to see huge variety of what this cold water haven has to offer. The Cove is protected, so you cannot take anything to keep as a souvenir.

Egypt, The Blue Hole.

In the Red Sea shore of the Sinai Desert, rests the blue hole. Surrounded with Bedwyn merchants, selling everything from diving gear to local food, the Blue Hole is one of the world most famous diving sites. The site doesn’t look like much until you realize that the sea floor drops abruptly away from the coastline. Many divers risked their lives in this hole. The tunnel that connects the hole with the open sea is more than 50 meters deep, that’s when nitrogen narcosis begins to influence.

California, Kelp Beds – Spring Fall

When the sun is out, and the water is clear, you will feel like you are diving in a cathedral. The beauty and life of these forests are endless. This can be a tough dive, due to the fact that you can get caught up in the kelp. Bit we’re all about adventure, aren’t we?

Climbing the Kilimanjaro

Ski - You’re going to fall. A lot.

I never skied in my life. I never had the chance you see, when you grow up in hot, desert climate, you only ski with your Play Station. I was quite good actually, but I never broke a leg while sitting in my living room, holding a controller in my hand. I hurt my thumb once. But I was reckless; I tried to reach my coke while playing cross country skiing 02’. So I was scared of skiing. I thought to myself that it’s not a big deal – so I won’t ski, who cares. Well, I was wrong about that. My friend, who is a professional skier, dragged me down to Colorado to an experience of a lifetime. If you think “he is a professional! He probably took good care of you” then you are very wrong. The first thing he said to me was “You’re going to fall. It will to hurt and you won’t be able to get up with all the equipment, so get ready to be embarrassed.” Then he pushed me down the hill. He is a great friend. You have no idea how frustrating it was, trying to get myself off the ground a minute after I decided to become a tree hugger and get a close, unfriendly introduction with a pine tree. The bright side was that after a couple of days I actually got the hang of it and even started to enjoy myself.

Preparing For Adventure Travel

So you wanna adventure travel but you want to make sure you are prepared before you take on skiing in Colorado or climbing Mt. Kilmanjaro? No problem! First, book your adventure travel early and get moving early. Of course follow any pre-trip guidelines but we suggest that you should be doing a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise 3 to 4 times a week for at least 3 months prior to your trip.

Second, your boots were made for walking so get to walking. Walk in your hiking boots way before you get ready to leave. The result of a great worn in hiking shoe is less blisters and a great fit.

Third, go to your doctor. Just to be safe let your family physician know exactly where you headed. Because he or she knows your medical history so well, she'll be able to give you any prescription drugs that you may need just in case.
